South Africa has a big problem—many newly trained doctors cannot find jobs, even though hospitals need more staff. This is causing long waiting times for patients and making healthcare worse for everyone.
Why Are Doctors Struggling to Find Work?
At least 1,800 new doctors finished their training in 2024 but are still waiting for jobs. Meanwhile, there are not enough doctors in public hospitals, and patients wait for hours or even days for treatment.
One of the biggest reasons is money. The government says there is not enough budget to hire more doctors, even though hospitals need them. In 2024, the government set aside R271.9 billion for healthcare, but this is not enough to cover all the needs.

Doctors Are Leaving South Africa
Because they cannot find jobs here, many doctors are moving to Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, where hospitals are hiring. South Africa is spending money to train doctors, but they end up working in other countries instead of helping our people.
Public Hospitals Are Overwhelmed
Even though there are unemployed doctors, hospitals are short-staffed. Patients sometimes wait hours or even days to get treatment because there are not enough doctors to help them. This makes it hard for doctors who are working because they have too many patients to see.

Will the NHI Fix This Problem?
The government says the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill will make healthcare better, but some experts worry that if there is no money to hire doctors now, the NHI might not work. Right now, 51% of healthcare money is spent on private hospitals, which only serve 14% of the population. The other 86% of people have to use government hospitals, which do not have enough doctors.

What Can Be Done?
To fix this, South Africa needs to:
Use money better so there is enough to hire doctors.
Send doctors to rural and township hospitals where more help is needed.
Improve hospitals so doctors can work in better conditions.
Make sure the NHI plan includes jobs for doctors so they don’t leave the country.
If these changes don’t happen soon, more doctors will leave, and people will struggle to get medical care.
